Northern Soul is a chip shop located in the heart of St Kilda on Inkerman Street. It is inspired by the 70's and adheres to the British and Irish style. Arguably being one of the best fish and chip shops in the south side. If you need a trusting feed that is guaranteed to fulfil all your food desires, you know where to go. We have the pleasure of catching up with Jess and Joe and asking them a few questions.
Jess and Joe, tell us a bit about yourself and the business
We are Jess and Joe of Northern Soul ! We are pretty new to the area and here on a mission to bring a little touch of Northern sparkle to our corner of St Kilda!
How long have you guys been around?
We bought an old 1970s caravan back in 2019 , stripped it back to an inch of its life and turned it in to a food truck. We hit the road serving up British and Irish style fish and chips at the start of the pandemic, and after an overwhelming amount of support from our customers, we decided it was time to build our own little shop ! We opened up on Inkerman street last November after living Northside for the past 7 years. We are passionate about transforming spaces, creating experiences, eating tasty food and making people happy ! Northern Soul is basically a big colourful cocktail of everything we love, and have learnt about life so far.
What’s your favourite item on the menu?
The Blackpool Tower is a tasty one and pretty much all of our staff members go-to’s when they’re feeling peckish. It’s a fish finger butty with coleslaw, sriracha, rocket and tartare sauce, served with hand cut chips drizzled with salt and vinegar (never fully complete without a pot of curry sauce!)
What’s your all-time favourite song?
Impossible question but after some serious deliberation we’re going with Sally Cinnamon by the Stone Roses as a timeless classic banger.
What do you love about St Kilda?
St Kilda is a big, eclectic melting pot of weird and wonderful characters from all walks of life ; we have the beach on our doorstep and being nestled on the outskirts of the most amazing city in the world - what’s not to love ! ( Having a theme park and an F1 track in your town is also pretty wild ). Recognising faces everywhere and having the most loyal and legendary customers also really makes us feel like St Kilda is home ! It's such a lovely feeling when you’re from the other side of the world.
What would you say your favourite clothing brand is?
Do you know how difficult it is to walk past your shop window without doing a double take every morning ? That makes this a hard one too ! Nike has to be our go to for trainers for sure . Innovative ideas, quality and consistency in the product and after listening to the book Shoe Dog , their story is super inspiring and some serious hard yards have been put into making Nike what it is today! We also love and appreciate what some local businesses have been creating recently, Brother Wolf are a Melbourne based barbershop who have done an amazing job of creating a quality collection of garms as part of their brand - support your local!
